Why village electrics is different
Wingham is a Little Stour valley village, mostly Grade II listed core around the church, with converted oast-houses on the edges and farm outbuildings that have become workshops and offices. The wiring reflects that: 1960s partial rewires with imperial VIR cable still lurking behind a modernised board, sub-mains to a barn that were never earthed properly, cottages where the main earth is a rusting spike in the corner of the boiler room.
We work with that. A village rewire in an unlisted 1950s semi is a straightforward two-day job. A rewire in a Grade II thatched cottage on the High Street is a three-week phased project with conservation officer consultation, lime-plaster reinstatement and cable routes agreed pre-start. Live in a listed cottage?
Wingham has around 60 Grade II listed buildings clustered on the High Street, plus a Grade I listing at St Mary's Church. Dover District Council conservation officers care about surface conduit runs, socket adds on principal elevations, and any work that affects historic fabric. We advise on which parts of the electrical scope need listed building consent before you spend money, and we route cabling through voids and floor lifts to keep historic finishes intact.
